Good lighting moments are not necessarily dramatic, expensive or even planned. They happen when the direction, amount, color and timing of light suit the person, surface or activity in front of us. A reading chair catches useful afternoon daylight. A shaded lamp makes faces comfortable to look at. A wall receives enough light to give a small room depth. The practical skill is to notice why each moment works before reaching for a new bulb or fixture.
What counts as a good lighting moment?
I think of a lighting moment as a relationship rather than a product. It includes a source of light, the surfaces receiving it, the activity taking place and the position of the observer. Change any one of those elements and the result can change too.
This is why a room cannot be judged only by whether it is bright enough. The current ISO/CIE indoor workplace standard says that good lighting requires attention to both quantity and quality, including how light is delivered, the color characteristics of sources and surfaces, and glare. Although a home is not an office specification exercise, that principle is a useful starting point: brightness alone does not explain visual comfort or atmosphere. The moment should support what is happening
A successful moment might help someone read fine print, prepare food, walk through a hallway or relax at the end of the day. Those activities do not need identical lighting. A concentrated pool of light may be useful on a book but unhelpful as the only illumination in a busy kitchen. Soft ambient light may suit a conversation but leave a work surface difficult to see.
It should give the eye somewhere comfortable to rest
Good lighting often creates a readable order: perhaps a bright table within a quieter room, a softly illuminated wall behind a person or a sequence of pools of light leading through a space. The brightest object does not automatically need to be the lamp itself. Frequently, the illuminated face, book, plant, artwork or wall is the more rewarding thing to see.
Look at effects before looking at fixtures
Fixtures attract attention because they are physical objects, but their effects tell me more. When entering a room, I want to delay naming the hardware and look at what the light is doing.
Faces
Notice whether faces appear clear without forcing anyone to squint. Light arriving mainly from directly overhead can produce strong shadows around the eyes, while light from a nearby window, wall or shaded lamp can add softer illumination from the front or side. This is not a rule that every shadow must disappear. Some modeling helps a face retain shape; the question is whether the contrast suits the setting.
Walls and ceilings
A room can feel dim even when a meter would find plenty of light on a horizontal surface. One reason may be that the walls and ceiling remain dark. Illuminated vertical surfaces sit naturally in our field of view and can make the boundaries of a room easier to understand. I want to notice when a wall wash, lamp shade or reflected patch of daylight makes the whole space feel more open without flooding everything uniformly.
Objects and materials
Light changes the appearance of timber, fabric, food, paint and skin because materials reflect different parts of its spectrum. NIST describes color rendering as the way object colors appear under a particular light and notes that familiar objects can look different as the illumination changes. Transitions
Doorways, stairs and routes between bright and dim areas deserve attention. A gentle sequence can feel calm and legible; an abrupt jump can make the next space harder to read at first glance. The most useful observation point may therefore be the threshold rather than the center of either room.
A seven-step walkthrough for noticing good lighting moments
This is the observation routine I want to use. It requires no specialist instrument. A phone camera and notebook are optional, and any measurements should be treated as supporting clues rather than professional verification.
- Choose one ordinary activity. Pick something specific: reading on the sofa, chopping vegetables, finding a coat or talking across a table. Avoid judging the entire room at once.
- Stand or sit where the activity happens. Lighting is viewpoint-dependent. Check the scene from the actual eye position, not only from the doorway.
- Identify every contributing source. Include windows, skylights, open doors, ceiling fittings, portable lamps, under-cabinet lights and reflections from pale walls or tabletops.
- Find the brightest visible area. Ask whether it is useful. If a bare lamp, window or glossy reflection dominates the view, move your head slightly or shield it temporarily and notice what changes.
- Study one face, object and surface. Look at facial shadows, the color and texture of a familiar object, and the brightness of a nearby wall or ceiling. These three checks reveal more than a general verdict of “nice” or “bad.”
- Change only one variable. Open a blind, switch off the overhead light, turn on a table lamp, change your seat or use an existing dimmer. Keeping the change small makes its effect easier to understand.
- Record the moment in plain language. Note the time, weather, active lights, activity and one reason the result worked. “Late afternoon; blind half closed; table lamp on; book clear; window no longer distracting” is more useful than “cozy.”
Repeating the walkthrough at morning, dusk and night can reveal that a successful room is not one fixed scene. It may be a collection of useful lighting states.

Glare is often the clue that changes the scene
Glare is not simply “too much light.” Position and contrast matter. CIE's 2024 review of daylight glare distinguishes between discomfort associated with the total amount of light reaching the eye and discomfort associated with extreme luminance contrast. It also emphasizes that glare models have limits and depend on the situation. The CIE daylight glare report summarizes the underlying factors.
For observation at home, I do not need to calculate a glare rating to learn something. I can ask whether the bright source is close to my normal line of sight, whether it is much brighter than its background and whether moving or shielding it improves the scene. A sunny window may be delightful from one chair and distracting from another. A small exposed LED may be unobtrusive when dimmed but uncomfortable at full output.
Photography can help identify contrast, but a phone automatically adjusts exposure and may exaggerate or conceal the experience. I would use photographs to remember source positions and shadow patterns, not as proof that a lighting condition is safe or compliant.
Turn observations into careful changes
Start with reversible adjustments
Before buying anything, try changing furniture orientation, lamp position, shade direction, blind position or the combination of lights being used. Clean diffusers and shades according to the manufacturer's instructions, because accumulated dirt can alter output and distribution. Describe the needed effect before choosing a product
“I need a lamp” is less useful than “I need light on the book without seeing a bright source reflected in the television.” The second description suggests placement, shielding, beam direction and control requirements. Product specifications can then support the effect instead of determining it by accident.
When comparing LED products, color appearance, color rendering, distribution and dimming behavior all deserve attention. ENERGY STAR explains that lower correlated color temperature values generally appear warmer and higher values cooler, but the number alone does not determine whether a room will feel good. Know where observation should stop
Moving a plug-in lamp or adjusting a blind is different from altering fixed wiring. A licensed electrician is needed for work involving new circuits, hardwired fixtures, wall controls, damaged wiring, unexplained flicker, heat, buzzing, burning smells, discoloration or repeated breaker trips. Do not open fittings, improvise electrical connections or exceed a fixture's ratings. Build a personal vocabulary for better light
The point of noticing good lighting moments is not to turn every room into a laboratory. It is to replace a vague reaction with a useful description. Instead of only saying that a restaurant, library or living room feels warm, calm or clear, I want to ask what the light is landing on, what remains quiet, where the brightest source sits and how the scene supports the people using it.
A small record can be enough: one photograph, one time of day, one activity and one sentence about why the moment works. Over time, repeated observations may reveal preferences—perhaps light on walls rather than a bright ceiling, separate task and ambient sources, or daylight softened before it reaches the eye. Those patterns can inform later reading in the lighting guides without pretending that personal preference replaces technical design.
My aim for this first entry is simple: notice the effect before naming the fixture. The better I become at seeing those relationships, the better my questions about lighting should become.
